Editorial Review

Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley

5 Outstanding
'Enhanced' is an excellent title for this CD. Buble enhances music that cuts across three decades and updates them with a new sound.Michael Buble could be the one who brings back swing and big band and he revives the love song. His voice is clear and fresh. He breathes new life into tunes of yesteryear and even does a better job on many of them compared to the originals. I heard this CD at a friends house, my wife and I love it. This is romantic, lilting music that will inspire you. I would not say that Buble is better than Sinatra, yet there is no comparing Buble's singing talent to anyone else. His rendition of Kissing a Fool was excellent."For Once in My Life," he sings that with full lung capacity and makes it very snappy. "Come Fly With Me," is really a kick, upbeat and perky. I really like his rendition to "Put Your Head on My Shoulder."This is a tribute to the time when music and America were great. This is going to be a gift I give to many of my friends over the next few months.

5 familiar sound, yet very fresh
I can't stop listening to this cd. Michael Buble has the Sinatra sound we all love with this style of music, yet he's not same old-same old or an imitator. I love the sassy edge he gives to the hot charts, which is reminicent of Bobby Darin, and the tenderness and smooth tone of the quieter moments, which sounds a bit like Mel Torme.I know I keep comparing him to others, but there really is a freshness. The quality of his sound evokes the comfort of familiarity, yet his passion makes it exciting and new. The arrangements are very nice, overall, and he is surrounded by quite an impressive company of muscians; this all launches and supports him well, yet the thing I'm hearing and loving has to do with him. I listen to standards all the time and can get bored with some treatments and some vocalists. I mean, you wouldn't think you'd want to hear anybody but Peggy Lee do "Fever", but Buble explodes this chart into a new realm without being pretentious or disrespecting the classic original. Whatever "it" is, he's got it and I look forward to future projects.

5 Gives Me Fever
I get chills everytime I listen to this voice!!! What an amazing album this turned out to be. Can't take it out of my player for fear of going through withdrawls. This is a must have album for those of us that love to hear a fantastic singer, who gives us one great song after another. Can't wait till he comes to my area, as a hear his show is an experience one never forgets. Thank you Michael, you bring me joy each and everytime I listen to you. I am looking forward to his next album, which I've read will have some of this amazing talents own songs.... Bring it on!!!!

5 A great CD from an awesome singer
This CD from Michael Bublé is absolutely amazing. I have loved swing music for a long time, especially the Rat Pack; Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, all of which Bublé would have been loved by. It is also good to see modern day artists going back to sing the classics, this album and Robbie William's 'Swing When Your Winning' album the true standouts. Michael Bublé's voice is pure, sassy and amazing. He performs the songs so well and makes them his own, which is what makes this album such a standout. A truly great cover song is when the song has the soul of the original with the new artist's signature on it and all of the songs seem fresh with Bublé's interpretation. I especailly like 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart', 'Come Fly With Me' and 'That's All'. If buying this from Amazon, make sure you also pick up Michael Bublé's 'Let it Snow EP' for Christmas.

5 "Michael Buble" one CD you will never get tired of playing.
Michael Buble is a special talent. I have been listening to his self-titled album "Michael Buble" for quite some time now and every time I hear Michael sing I am just amazed at how mature and seasoned his voice is. Others have mentioned comparisons to other great performers from the past, but Michael doesn't have to rely on anyone's reputation but his own. With his gorgeous voice and unique style he will be a permanent fixture in the pop music scene for many years to come. This CD is really well done. The song selections and production are perfect for a singer of Michael's great ability. You are really going to enjoy this CD! If you enjoy listening to crooners and Big Band Swing, I would also suggest Monte Procopio. His 13-piece band swings and Monte can really sing the standards.

5 WOW! Truly Amazing Voice!
Ok, I admit I stumbled on this CD by accident. I had seen the CD cover and thought he looked like Justin Timberlake. I am a HUGE Justin Timberlake fan, if that gives you any indication of my music tastes. Not knowing what to expect, I listened to the CD in the store. I immediately fell in love. Michael Buble has a rich, velvety voice that is smooth as butter. He's pretty easy on the eyes too! I bought this CD 5 days ago, and I seriously can't get enough. It's all I listen to and I sing his songs to myself all day long. I absolutely adore this man's voice! I wish I could hear him perform live. I have raved about this CD to all my friends and family in the last 5 days, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I am about to turn 30, so I didn't grow up listening to this type of music, but I definitely have an appreciation for it when Michael Buble sings. This is one CD that I, my mother, and my grandmother will all enjoy.

4 Buble's Voice a New Gem among Classic Music's past.
I will preface this review by letting readers know I am not the typical Sinatra era fan reliving music from my past. I am a young listener who appreciates a wide genre of music ranging from R & B to the pop sounds of Christina Aguilera. I stumbled upon Michael Buble's music listening to clips from the "Down with Love" soundtrack. Beautiful clear voice coupled with a good choice of classic material make this self titled album a solid winner. I appreciate the fact David Foster and others are taking advantage of modern music technology to enrich and update those classic 40's-60's sounds. Another artist I am sure fans of Bulbe will appreciate with this updated sound is Frank Stallone and the album "In Love In Vain" (Yes, I do believe he is the brother of Sylvester 'Rocky' Stallone). The Christmas album "Let it Snow!" while brief, doesn't disappoint as well. I was disappointed with his follow up album "Totally Buble". The quality of the material and sound in this reviewers opinion was below average. AM radio quality and generic bland material doomed this album. After reading previous readers reviews I now understand why. A good compilation of the modern updates is to download off of Napster this album ($9.95) and add various other cuts from the "Down with Love" soundtrack at 99 cents each. It really made a nice CD of music.

5 The boy is soooooooo good!
I bought singing lessons on CD "Voice Lessons TO GO" by Vaccarino, because I was tired of being embarrased to sing with him when my husband was around! I love to play Buble's CD over a good home cooked meal. It is is such romantic music- his voice is so charming. I am also a huge Harry Connick Jr. fan. If you like one, you'll like the other.

3 The lost art of the voice!
In this age of popstars, idols and celebrity worship, the art of singing usually seems to have been forgotten. Marketing, personality, and looks are all nowadays quite openly looked upon as the most important aspects of an artist courting popularity. Michael Buble has all these (looks, big label, big managers, big producers, etc.), but the amazing thing is... his voice and delivery are pure class. This kind of authoritative but unhistrionic, stand-and-deliver, conversationally-toned singing hasn't been in fashion, or even heard, for years. There are beautiful echoes of Jack Jones, Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme all the way through this album. Does anyone remember Jack Jones? Most of the songs, singing, and production from this collection would sound quite at home on some of Jack Jones' terribly unfashionable 70s albums (which, by the way are not available on CD - now may be the time to release them, someone!). The song selection here is sometimes overly conservative and bland, or sometimes even kitsch ("Crazy Little Thing"), but the voice usually compensates for any mediocrities in songwriting and orchestration. George Michael and Barry Gibb are good songwriter choices - maybe Michael Buble should do more of these kinds of songs in this kind of setting? Some of the swing stuff may be overly blatantly Sinatra-influenced, but it's impeccably done.I'm very much looking forward to hearing more from this guy...

5 Fever 'ish , Sway 'ish and Scintillatingly HOT!
Since seeing Buble featured on EXTRA the other night, I found myself doing a little research. Along with IN TOUCH magazine they had listed him as one of the Ten Hottest Hunks to watch for in 2004 - he has those movie star looks - so I then had to see if the voice could match... I have not taken his cd out of my player since I bought it yesterday - it's HOT - like him! I spent hours on his fansites and discovered that the effect he has made on me is one that has spread around the globe. He has become an international favorite virtually overnight. And no wonder. Here's what the cd shapes up like:1.Fever (this is HOT! it gives me Feverrrrrrrr)2.Moondance (move over Van, this take is best by far)3.Kissing a Fool (George M, THIS is how to turn them on...)4.For once in my Life (talk about uplifting!)5.How can you mend a Broken Heart (with backups by the Beegees!)6.Summer wind (you can feel the breeze...Franky move over!)7.You'll never find another love like mine (make me wish....)8.Crazy little thing called Love (fun and fast)9.Put your head on my shoulder (Mr.Anka must be proud)10.Sway (I am, and do, every time I hear it!!)11.The way you look tonight (tender and romantic, so fine)12.Come fly with me (anywhere Michael, anywhere)13.That's All (what love songs were meant to sound like)My average song rating? 10 out of 10 - a perfect score!

2 Insincerity, Camp, Kitsch, Schmaltz with Bubbles!!!
This guy looks nice and he looks young. His voice is pleasant and he sounds vaguely like a number of other singers (Sinatra, Martin, Bennett, Connick Jr., etc.). I have now heard this CD - too many times - up loud! - in my shop. So what is it like?Well, this is a real 'middle of the road' album. Inoffensive and dull most of the time but occasionally it tries to go up tempo it just doesn't work. If you want to listen to this sort of thing - a modern crooning man's voice doing standards in lush arrangements - then you should opt for stylish and experienced singers like Michael Feinstein or Harry Connick Jr. Those two gentelmen do this sort of thing convincingly and with style. What is more, they get inside the music, lyrics and story of a song and bring it to life.Mr. Bublé's disc does have a certain camp/kitsch quality to it - when he sings "How can you mend a broken heart?" - you can just picture him in a tuxedo (dinner suit)with a microphone in a lounge bar - with a big grin on his face! This is not an 'interpretation' of a song - he is merely singing it! A song like this needs the singer to convince us he is feeling pain and in desperation. Bubbles sounds like he is on an ego-trip - enjoying the sound of his own voice far too much. His "Crazy little thing called love" - is even more camp than Freddie Mercury's version - if that is possible!!! All style and no substance! Mr. Bublé needs to learn, not only how to get inside a sound and feel the words and the music, but also how to pick suitable material for his voice and standards. At the moment, he is merely a superior Karaoke singer and he is awfully young and inexperienced in this style of music. This sort of music not only needs style and pleasant voice - it needs experience, heart, sass, attention to detail, attitude and maybe a bit of life experience! What am I saying??!!! Maybe this guy has a great future ahead of his singing to drunks in Las Vegas casinos!! Wayne Newton can't live forever, can he? (Heck! Give me Wayne any day! He is the real thing!)Don't believe the hype - Bubbles' first album isn't brilliant and it isn't really that good, either. It does, however, have the G FACTOR - Grannies, [and] Girls will (er... may) love it!Needless to say, this recording will sell well and make MrBubléa shirt-load of dough. He will become popular and lots of people will suggest that critics of this singer, like me, are being negative and too hard on this guy. Maybe I am, but there are lots of fabulous singers in the world and they deserve the kind of chance Bublé has received.

5 Harry Connick Jr. eat your heart out!
I first heard Michael Buble in the film DOWN WITH LOVE. I turned to my friends and asked "Who is that singing? He's great!" But I didn't think about the unknown singer for weeks. Then I was in a CD store with the same friends and one turned to me and said "You must get this CD. This is the guy you liked from DOWN WITH LOVE." Well, I bought the CD and rushed home to listen to it. This guy has real talent. Harry Connick Jr. may be a fine musician but he is but "a poor man's Sinatra" next to a singer like Michael Buble. Buble brings something more to the standards. He has a sweeter voice than Connick yet brings a more individual style too. In some ways he is reminiscent of Bobby Darin but whereas Darin could certainly swing, Buble also brings a sensuality to his music. His version of "Sway" is by far the best I have heard and my current favorite from the CD. The arrangements are all great and the selections range from standards like "Fever" and "Come Fly With Me" to new classics like "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and "Moondance". Buble's cover of "The Way You Look Tonight" would make even Fred Astaire proud.

5 Absolutely Wonderful!!
I heard Michael Buble sing "Kissing a Fool" on the Sharon Osborne show (I was flipping and his voice grabbed my attention.) I was so impressed, I had to get it. I am glad to say that "Kissing a Fool" is not my favorite song, while it's great I like "Fever" and "How can you Mend a Broken Heart" the best. "Sway" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" want to make you get up and dance! And "Fever" is fantastic! On the slower note, "That's All" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" make me swoon! His voice is amazing and I love the songs. I know I am going against the grain when I say that I am not a big fan of Frank Sinatra, and I don't particularly care for the covers "Summer Wind" and "Come Fly Away with Me". A friend who is a Sinatra fan says he prefers Sinatra. Even with those two songs not being my favorites the rest of the CD is so fantastic, I just overlook it. I would highly reccomend this CD. (Which is exactly what I'm doing!) Go and get it. You will not be dissapointed!

5 A Great Voice, A Promising Career, New Singing Sensation
I was tuned in to Jazz station 94.7 The Wave, and "Moondance" was playing. I said to myself, "Oh my what a voice! It couldn't be Harry Connick, Jr, couldn't be Michael Feinstein, couldn't be Bobby Caldwell, definitely not Frank Sinatra or Mel Torme! Who is this singer?" After the song, the DJ said ... "You just heard "Moondance" by Michael Buble.... pronounced as (Boo-blay) from the CD Michael Buble......" I never heard of him! I ordered the CD from Amazon.com and found myself not only listening to it but singing along as well. Great selection of songs from the initial song "Fever", followed by one of my favorites, "Moondance" (makes you sing along & snap your fingers...). Listening to the slower ones, "Kissing A Fool", "The Way You Look Tonight", "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine", and ""Put Your Head On My Shoulder" makes you want to fall in love again! His renditions of "Come Fly With Me", "For Once In My Life" and "Summer Wind" are almost like the legendary Francis Albert Sinatra's style. "For Once In My Life" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" are equally mesmerizing. If you're in the mood for dancing and swinging and want to be cool and hip, then dance to the tune of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (I like the refrain.....there goes my baby.....she knows how to rock & roll, she drives me crazy....). Likewise with "Sway" where you can dance and "Cha-Cha-Cha"."That's All", the last tract, is one of my all-time favorites. Hopefully, it's not "that's all" for this young and promising new singer. He deserves a pat on the back. Congratulations Mr. Michael Buble! This CD is superb and a nice addition to anyone's collection.

5 Now This is Music!
Until yesterday I had never heard of this singer;Michael Buble'.I put on a headset at the mall and was sampling their featured CD's....this being one of many.To say I was blown away doesn't begin to describe my reation to what I was hearing.I'm a 44 year old who grew up listening to, and truly loves the standards, big band, and 50's and 60's music. I am basically time wharped with my choice of music. The orchestration and arrangements only make this CD better. They already had a great voice to start it all.David Foster turns everything he touches into gold.I had to keep looking at the CD case, because it was hard to believe that someone so young was putting out this amazing sound. Like me, he must have an "old soul".I have already shared this CD with several of my family and they were truly impressed as well. Try doing that with Hip-Hop and Rap....yeah right. With younger vocalists performing these timeless pieces, this music could last forever, and this is one lady who is extremely greatful.I look foward to seeing where this young man's career will take home.He has a new fan in New Jersey.....that's for sure!

4 I Like this CD - A Lot
I just bought this CD 3 days ago, and I've played it probably 10 times already. Its a pretty good album - Michael Buble has a very good - although Sinatra/Torme/Connick - sounding voice. The arrangements are well made too - but Just The Way You Look Tonite should have preferably been arranged as a slow croon rather than bossa nova style.I usually look into the Tower reviews to see if anybody else liked the CD's I buy, and it seems that a lot of other people like MB as well as I do. There are however a few people who really blasted him in their reviews. Not only blasted, but outright insulted him - a Karaoke singer!? Really now. Around 10 of 155 reviewers gave him 1-3 stars, and all I can say is that talent is in the ears of the beholder (or in this case, the listener). Measuring MB on the review scale, he is most obviously a talented singer who has moved his audience.I hope MB comes out with his own album of The Great American Songbook. I'll be looking forward to hearing it, and reading the reviews.

5 A Young Man's Art
Breathing new life into a type of music that Sinatra sang and Nelson Riddle conducted takes a heck of a lot of breath support and support is what this Michael Buble's CD seemed to have in the making of it. David Foster producing, Paul Anka executive producing, Barry Gibbs singing back-up, Mandel, Foster, and Costa arranging. Whoa! It didn't hurt to plug a few power cords into these legendary sources.Unequivocally and indubitably, this is a new sound coming out of an otherwise vintage music type. Buble's voice displays the confidence and emotional range which are qualities often only mastered by old-time craggy crooners. Often, the cruel irony in music is that by the time you learn how to sing and life experiences provides you with something to say, your voice wears out. But apparently Buble's wine has aged before he did. His voice is strong and vital. And all the technicals are there--amazing breath support, super control, fine-tune pitch, mellifluous tone. And he doesn't sing with a tight throat like Sinatra.Buble's phrasing is Carmen McRae quality. McRae always had the ultimate respect for the word and so does Buble. Words have endings and Buble finishes them off nicely without a pedantic harshness. Then, like McRae, Buble puts the words together and tells a story. The magnificent singer not only effectively conveys a musical idea, but also attaches a verbal idea to it. The result is rich. This Buble CD incorporates newer songs with the usual standards and its a real nice blend. The offering of songs are varied yet connective--that has got to come from a strong sense of who Buble is and what he can do. Apparently, he can do a lot.

5 Definitely a new kid on the block in the swinging world
Bought this CD after a friend recommending it, I'm certainly thrilled when I listened to the songs. Michael Buble's voice is one of the best I've heard, rivaled that of Sinatra, Darin, and even Robbie Williams. I especially like his take on "Fever" (updating Peggy Lee's tune), "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" (even better than Al Green), "Sway" (the Latinish background music is very cool), "The Way You Look Tonight", and "Come Fly With Me" (sang it as well as Frank, very few singers can do that). Overall, an excellent album, I look forward to buy his new CD when it's released later this year. Move over Harry Connick, Jr and Michael Feinstein, there's a new guy in town!!

2 Strictly for background easy listening
How ironic that American Idol judge Randy Jackson should praise Michael Buble. Because this album sounds like American/Pop Idol on the night they get the contestants to "do" Big Band numbers. The record company and producer David Foster have gone for the safest possible option to ensure that it appeals to everyone who thinks that Perry Como is cutting edge. So we have songs made immortal by Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin. Don't try anything fancy - use the original arrangements (well they were the best). While we're at it why not try and corner the housewife market - throw in some Bee Gees and Stevie Wonder; be real adventurous and go for whatever market still thinks George Michael and Freddie Mercury camp is cool.I'm sorry but it all sounds too boy band or cabaret for comfort. The start of "For Once In My Life" reminded me of the old British variety performer Frankie Vaughan and "Give Me The Moonlight". "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" is so awash with Barry Gibb they might as well have used the Bee Gees track wholesale. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" sounds like a poor cover of Dwight Yoakam's cover version; "Fever", with its watered-down electric bass line, sounds pathetic. The best tracks are Van Morrison's "Moondance" and George Michael's "Kissing A Fool", and he does have a good stab at the guvnor's "Come Fly With Me". But it's all far too smooth and polished; from the sleevenotes I see that the strings and horns (except for the odd solo) are synth programmed, and I have to say it all sounds programmed. There is no denying the man can sing; he does sound like the young Sinatra. At the moment you're far better off with the real thing, even recordings 60 years old. Hopefully someone will find him some more original material and some decent backing musicians for his next album; in the meantime I'm reserving this for strictly background easy listening, when we're entertaining and want something on but don't want to spoil the conversation.
