Editorial Review

Those who know Jack Johnson only as college radio fave are in for a pleasant surprise here, as are wave-riding aficionados with a taste for eclectic, cooled-out musical vibes. The project Surfer magazine hailed as 2000's Video of the Year was originally a collaboration between surfing champ/then-USC film student Johnson and school colleagues Chris and Dan Malloy. But Johnson also gratifyingly took the opportunity to prove that "surf music" is purely a subjective term; indeed, electric instruments are few and far between here, let alone the traditional buzzsaw licks of such genre stalwarts as Dick Dale and Gary Hoey. Instead, Johnson has stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album's "Holes to Heaven" and the sprightly instrumentals "Moonshine" and "Cove," while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy "Rainbow." Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental "Hobo Blues" and laconic "Honor and Harmony." But its also a collection that ventures as far afield as The Meters' 70's-funky "Liver Splash"., Finley Quaye's spare soul, the folk-raga of Kalyanji/Anadji's "My Guru" and the spacey, haunting "Dark Water and Stars" by Natural Calamity. --Jerry McCulley

5 Summer Driving
Highly recommended...perfect for driving music during a trip to the shore...no skips on this album.. play it straight through... makes me consider purchasing the September Sessions... I wish Jack would release his live album on CD.. only options are vinyl or $56 for Japanese import. If you have the opportunity to see Jack live... jump at the chance.. saw him last summer at the Mann in Philly... great to hear "The News" off of Brushfire, live...

5 Very nice surprise
I picked up this CD on a whim from a local store on a "new releases" rack just because the sepia toned packaging caught my eye. I looked it over and thought "Hmmm, this looks interesting." I put it back down and two days later I went back and got it and I wasn't really sure why other than I was very curious. Especially about the two songs "Underwater Love" and "Thicker Than Water." I have heard of G Love and Jack Johnson, but hadn't heard any of their music before. On first listen I was incredibly pleased at the music on the CD. The song "My Guru" is by now memorized in my head as is "Underwater Love." The song "Thicker Than Water" is really, really beautiful and fills my head with visions of waves and sand and warm air during a dreary and cold Indiana winter. This is the coolest CD I have bought in a long time and came across it by accident. The only problem is now I have to go track down the Smoke City CD's because I am in love with the sound of the lead singer's voice and her vocal stylings. I recommend this CD very highly. It's a great CD to just chill to. You could call it music to nap by, but I prefer to call it music to imagine by. This has become the soundtrack to my daydreams. Try it!!!!

1 great music, lame soundtrack
i gav ethis a one star because it only includes about 1/3 of the actual soundtrack from the movie (which includes the music from the awesome extra footage). they should have made this a two-disc soundtrack, because they left out some GREAT tracks. i expected better from jack johnson and the malloys. the stuff thats on here is great though.

3 Now I love The Voyces, too
The Voyces' song, RELATE TO ME, is easily the standout. (I tracked them down as a result of this soundtrack and bought their whole record, which I would highly recommend.) I dig Jack Johnson, so I like those songs, as well. The bottom line is this: it's worth it alone to discover this wonderful group called The Voyces. But if you like Jack's music, you should buy this CD anyway.

4 The Voyces are in my head.
A friend of mine showed me this movie a while back and I liked the music in it so much that I had to buy the soundtrack. The Voyces song reminds me of Cat Stevens back when he was good. The title track is really good also. I do skip over some of the songs but I will still recommend.

4 Good driving music
This is an excellent CD to listen to while driving up and down the California coast. Jack Johnson seems to be getting better and better. And The Voyces have a very interesting sound. G. Love delivers as always.

5 Road Trippin
I didn't hear of Jack Johnson until I heard On and On at a bar one night and I was floored. After I bought On and On I went out and bought Thicker Than Water and was equally impressed. At first I was thrown off by all these different artists, most of which I never heard of, but after hearing it I was sold. I recently made a trip from Tampa to Boston and back and I listened to this record and On and On for a lot of the trip. The songs are so smooth and put you in a good place.

4 Underdog
I found my way to this album under the assumption that Jack Johnson was about to blow me away again with yet another dreamland experience packaged in a compact disc. I should have done my homework. Here is what I discovered: If you're the John Mayer, pop-culture hungry aficionado, then you might want to pass on this album. Not to discount Mayer and his fans, but this CD isn't songs of love and breathtaking vocals. Rather, it is an instrumental and experimental collection of sounds that is wonderfully mastered by the creativity of Jack Johnson.I'm not here to say the CD isn't worth buying. In fact, I highly suggest you do check it out even if you are the Mayer fan I referred to before. The first time you listen, you are going to wonder what the heck you just bought. But before long you are mysteriously addicted. Great stuff.

5 Love It!
I bought this CD about 3 months ago in a little music shop in the city, because of the surfing influence. Today in the car I put it in the CD player for the third time in a row. I really enjoy the different types of music, it dosn't get old like most "various artists" CD's I own. I have especially taken a liking to Jack Johnson, lovely guitar.

5 Moving Towards Zen
Very few cds that I know of are listening to. Even fewer CDs are worth listening to the whole way through, not this cd. This cd is a diamond in the rough. It blends with my soul, soothing out any wrinkles of anger and frustration that lay buried within me. Many people go for drives in their car to sort things out when they're stressed, I am not one of them. That is, I wasn't until I listened to this album. Every one of the songs, from the acoustic medley to the indian beat could be set on repeat for hours without bothering me. Under stress? Buy this cd, don't even look at the song names, just stick it in the player and go cruisin down a winding road, it will help, I guarantee it.
