4 Worth a listen or three
While there's no denying that this band has been overrated by most critics, this is still a musically vigorous album. I didn't expect to like it, but I found bits and pieces sticking with me after only hearing it once. The style of the album is mostly a dramatic backdrop of guitars with occasional dance beats (one of the early songs shamelessly steals the beat of New Order's "Temptation"), with the agonized singing of the band's leader in the foreground. The album's concept apparently has something to do with dead family members, but it's not too apparent from the lyrics. What's really memorable here are the songs on their own: the urgent build of "Tunnels", the ballsy emotional openness of "Wake Up", the music that surges over some woman's caterwauling during "In the Backseat". And okay, I'll admit it - these moments do add up to one of the more worthwhile albums of the last couple years.I can't really imagine that this will be one for the ages, but its lyrics are often competent, the singers are tolerable, and the musical styles are distinctive and often touching. These days, that's the best you can hope for from mainstream indie rock. Sure it's contrived and overdone, but there's the seed of something genuine here.

5 A Great Purchase
I bought this record after reading such great reviews about this band and the album on amazon.com and I caught a glimpse of the band performing on Conan O'Brien one night. It totally blew me away that it seemed like twelve people in the band can make a noise so unheard of and unique. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Neighborhood 2 (Laika)" and I also love "Rebellion (Lies)." Besides those songs the album is one that can be listened to from start to finish. This is one of those Canadian bands that get overlooked by the public because they believe that everyone who lives in Canada sounds like Alanis Morrisette. I recommend this cd to anyone who listens to garage rock, indie rock, alternative, and even pop-rock. I actually think that anyone can like this music no matter what your preference is. "Funeral" by Arcade Fire is one of the best records I have heard of in 2005.

5 speaks for itself
so there are around 240 reviews of this album as i write the 241st. since almost every review lands between four and five stars, i would say that this record speaks for itself.with that said, the cross-hairs of my review are centered on the clueless individuals who have taken the time to try to rag on this record. to those who are even thinking of taking those reviews seriously, check out the other albums that these people have reviewed. some guy reviewed a STYX record along with funeral. seriously? would you even want to TALK to someone who had listened to a full STYX record and then felt compelled to write about it online? i didn't think so.funeral speaks for itself. the only other record in the last 10 years that hit me as hard as this one was 69 Love Songs. funeral is beautiful in too many ways to really even write about. not to mention the 240 before me do a pretty decent job. there are certain songs, and hopefully you know what i'm talking about, that when you hear them, the hair on the back of your neck and arms stand up just from the sheer emotional power that they invoke. 9 of the 10 songs on funeral do that to me, and have done that to me, even after listening to the album upwards of 50 or 60 times. so, to the cluelessly lame and obviously intelectually lacking individuals who have taken the time to attempt to "save" people from hearing such "awful" music, do yourself a favor. go back to your room, tell mom you're skipping dinner tonight, and listen to that STYX album. but please, for the love of God, stop trying to claim that you know even a shred about music. you don't.
