Editorial Review

For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and the London Boys Choir. This deluxe, double-disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs, with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs--which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

Rating:

5 best of "phantom"
In my opinion, a better cast could not have been picked for 2004 "Phantom of the Opera". Patrick Wilson did his part great, just as it should have been acted; Emma Rossum sweet and her singing wonderful; Minnie Driver was excellent and comic in her part, and as for Gerard Butler, no one could have done it better. I loved his voice for the part and although Michael Crawford is a good singer, Butler's voice spelled a slight danger and wonderful romance in his and no makeup took away his good looks. Sarah Brightman is a great singer but, with Rossum, I didn't have to strain to hear the words and she put a whole heap more emotion into her role. Andrew Webber and his director wanted to show romance, and that's what they did.

5 I LOVE IT!!!!!
i LOVED THE MOVIE AND i HAD TO HAVE TO SOUNDTRACK!!!! Althought it is all opera music I enjoyed very much and hope that the music that is sung touches you all as it was touched me!!!! If you really listen to the words being sung you can tell it is full of passion and emotion. I think that Emmy Rossum is a fantastice singer. The rest of the cast as well are very talented!!!!! The music is very soothing and relaxing. The voices are very soft and smooth. If you lie in bed and listen to the CD you will probably fall asleep. Once again I WOULD recommend these CDs to whoever wants them!! Your missing out if you don't take them!!

5 Loved the movie, was able to relive it through the Soundtrack
Couldn't get enough of the film but I couldn't bring my television and DVD player everywhere I went. The soundtrack was the solution and it let me recall all the phantoms come-hither glances that made my toes curl. I am able to listen to this CD over and over and never tire. Great movie, great soundtrack.
